GNSS for Rail

For our first ‘In Focus’, we’ll be taking a look at one of the most used technologies on the planet: Global Navigation Satellite Systems or GNSS, as it is known in the industry.

It’s been around a while now, yet whereas in the 1970s GPS was first developed to serve civil/military applications, nowadays its use is widespread: from guiding cargo ships halfway across the world, to getting you to your favourite takeout.

Here is a recent article published with EOS on how GNSS technology can be leveraged in infrastructure. For instance to improve the way the railway industry carries out its asset inspection and maintenance.

Combining GNSS, GIS mobile software and automated pipelines the solution sped up high precision capture, health and safety reporting and progress tracking. Imagine capturing assets location to within less than 1m in a variety of wet and windy conditions at the touch of a button!
